Inter Service Rugby Championship
The Inter Service Championship has long been a showcase of military pride and sporting prowess, with the Royal Navy playing a crucial role in its history. Dating back to 1920, when the newly formed Royal Air Force joined the Army and Royal Navy, this three-way rugby rivalry has become a mainstay of British military sport. The Royal Navy’s early success in the tournament, winning the inaugural Championship under the leadership of England fly-half Dave Davies, set the tone for their competitive spirit in the years to follow.
Though the Army has emerged as the most dominant force in the Senior Men’s competition, the Royal Navy has remained a formidable contender, securing 20 titles over the decades. Their legacy is not only embedded in the men’s game but also in the growth of women’s rugby. Since the inception of the Women’s Inter Service Championship in 2003, the Royal Navy’s Senior Women’s team has been a driving force in the sport’s growing popularity. While the Army has traditionally led the way in the women’s competition, the Royal Navy continues to build strong squads ,contributing to the expansion of rugby within the forces.
From community rugby via the regional setup to the U23s and Veterans Championships, Royal Navy rugby has thrived, ensuring the development of future talent and the celebration of seasoned veterans. As the Navy looks to add to their tally in the men’s and women’s competitions, their deep-rooted history and commitment to rugby remains a cornerstone of the Inter Service Championship.
