On the Up – Victory for Royal Navy Rugby Union U23s v London Scottish Academy

The Royal Navy Rugby Union Under 23 squad took on a London Scottish Academy side on a crisp, clear evening at the United Services Ground on Wednesday. The Royal Navy, fielding a strong team, were quickly on the back foot as London Scottish began at a lively pace and it was not long before they took the lead with a well-executed catch and drive from the line out.  With the score 0 - 5 the home side kicked into life.  They began exerting pressure by securing quick ball from the breakdown and using their strong forward pack to drive the ball up.  This pressure resulted in the award of a penalty which was duly converted by Acreman. 3 – 5. Medics Rugby Challenge 2017

The 2017 Medics Rugby Challenge charity match between the Royal Marines and the Peninsula Medical School will take place at Plymouth Albion RFC on Tuesday 7th November 2017.  This year’s match will be the ninth in the series with the Royal Marines leading with 5 wins to 2 (one match was a draw).  The aim of the event is to raise money for the Royal Marines Charity and it has now become a permanent fixture and highlight of the West Country Rugby calendar. The Royal Navy Women’s Development Squad took on Havant Women in their first competitive game at HMS Collingwood. The team was largely comprised of players who have only recently started their playing careers, augmented by a small number of more experienced players to help them develop their skills. The team spent an enjoyable day training together before facing an evening match against a strong Havant Ladies side (who are currently leading the RFUW NC 2 league). The first match of the Inverdale Challenge Cup saw a clash between the Royal Navy’s Northern Region and Western Region teams at the Rectory in Devonport, some 510 miles from the Scottish based team's home. The aim of the Inverdale Challenge is to provide a competitive Rugby competition at a Regional level exposing players to a higher standard of rugby than is played at Unit level, thus creating a players’ playing pathway from the community to the representative level. This also provides an opportunity for representative team management to look at players in a competitive environment for possible selection for the Royal Navy Rugby Union representative teams.
