The Royal Navy took on the Royal New Zealand Navy in what was to be a clash between two sides determined to play an exciting brand of rugby and both having their sights set on winning the 2009 Babcock Commonwealth Cup. The Kiwis had begun their campaign in fine style with a convincing win on Tuesday over the Royal Australian Navy 45 points to 12. After a hard fought victory over the Royal New Zealand Navy on Friday, the Royal Navy has made some changes to face the Australians on Monday. Captain Dave Pascoe will be missing due to injury, as will Dom Griffen and Dale Sleeman. However, fans can look forward to seeing the return of exciting winger Josh Drauniniu. The first match will again see the Kiwis in action against the RNRU President’s Select XV, kick off at 4pm. The match to decide the winners of the Babcock Commonwealth Cup – RN v RAN, will Kick off at 7.15pm. All matches at PARFC, Brickfields, Plymouth. The Babcock Commonwealth Cup 2009 started with a well deserved win for the Royal New Zealand Navy over the Royal Australian Navy by 45 points to 12. The first silverware of the competition went to the New Zealanders as they overcame a spirited Australian Navy team at Plymouth Albion on Tuesday night. The Shelford-Stokes International Shield, presented for the first time this year, will be making its way to New Zealand. The trophy was named after former RNZN sailor, undefeated All Black Captain and life patron of the RNZN Rugby Union Wayne (Buck) Shelford. ROYAL NAVY LOOKS TO THE FUTURE FOR THE 2009 BABCOCK COMMONWEALTH CUP A variety of injuries, career courses and operational deployments mean that 12 capped players are unavailable for the Royal Navy squad to take on the Southern Hemisphere in the Babcock Commonwealth Cup. However, this has presented the Royal Navy Director of Rugby, Geraint Ashton Jones and New Head Coach, Billy May with a real opportunity to select 9 players from the under 23s for the RN Squad.
