Following a 13 year absence, Devonport Services Rugby Football Club were delighted to be invited to compete in the Devon Cup for the 2015/16 season. In the first round match The Sporting Blues were drawn against Sidmouth. Despite playing at home, Devonport were unable to turn this to their advantage and Sidmouth emerged the victors, winning 27-24 after a hard fought encounter that included extra time. Sidmouth went on to play Torquay in their second round match.
With the support of both Plymouth Rugby Combination and the Royal Navy Rugby Union, the club were keen to be re-admitted to the competition following their departure in 2002. The depa...
Buoyed by their opening 50-26 victory, away against Cambridge University, the Royal Navy have made eight changes to the starting XV for their visit to Esher on Wednesday night. The skipper Ben Priddey leads a pack that sees three changes, whilst only Cory Moore and Matt Tichias remain of the backline that started at Cambridge. Having had time together the team will be looking to build on their opening match performance, against a team that traditionally lay down a fast and physical challenge on their full width Moseley Road pitch.
In the front row, John Court returns at tight head with Chris Warner swapping across to loose head and Ben Priddey at hooker. Behind them ...
Under a floodlit USSG PORTSMOUTH pitch on a cool, still Wednesday night the RNRU(W) executed their most clinical and convincing win in 2 years, against HM Prison Service Ladies. Led by their Captain, Charlotte Fredrickson, the RN Women were in buoyant mood after their victory in January against Yeovil RFC Ladies. There were nerves aplenty but as RNRURS referee Stu Collins blew the whistle, they didn’t show and the RN Women went on the offensive. The RN Women started aggressively, going into contact with the forwards recycling the ball quickly and the backs being given clean ball by scrum half Oli Critchley. The RN Women made quick ground early, allowing Charlotte...
The RN Mariners started the preparation for defending their Inter Services Crown with a hard fought victory over Devonport Services RFC Vets at The Keyham 3G Pitch in Devonport, Plymouth. Although a victory, at times they lacked their killer instinct and finesse and would have walked away content with the result but frustrated knowing the margin could have been a lot greater if not for some simple mistakes in their play and decision making at key times during the game.
The RN exerted their dominance on the game immediately from the kick off, forcing Services to defend from deep and fight their way out of their Red Zone on numerous occasions in the opening 10 minutes. The R...
A topsy-turvy game saw the UKAF U23 XV end up victorious, 13-21 in their trial match against a committed Ealing Trailfinders side. Trial matches are always slightly disjointed due to the need to ensure every player gets some game time, but the Royal Navy backrow trio of Ben Watson, Ben Roberts and Lewis Cooper remained unchanged and it was their work at the breakdown and through making the hard yards that laid the foundations for a deserved UKAF victory. With all Navy players giving a good showing of themselves there should be a strong dark blue representation in the UKAF side that plays Oxbridge before the Army Navy Match on 30 th April.
The Royal Navy provided ten playe...
