Chief Petty Officer John Manners (Team Coach) and Leading Physical Trainer James Johnson (Team Manager) convinced (!) eleven sailors from HMS Sultan to attend the Benidorm 7s Rugby Tournament. Comprising mainly Phase 2 and 3 trainees, they were keen to be selected to represent Sultan in the tournament. The age range of the players and their experience levels varied greatly; some players, such as Ryan Scott, have been in the RN for less than a year, whereas others such as Andrew John have served for well over a decade. After many months of painstaking planning, this was the first stage of what was to be a very memorable trip.

The first cup win of the season for the Sharks came at the Yeovil 7s rugby festival last weekend. It was a two-day event and the RNRU entered 3 teams, the Sharks, the Sharks development side - the Stingrays and the RN Women's 7s side - the Makos. This was the second time this season that all 3 teams have come together to play at a tournament. The teams arrived with an air of optimism. The Sharks had 6 players unavailable so with the new players in the team they were unsure of what to expect. Kyle Wood and Robbie Elder were a couple of the new players for this event. Over 250 sailors and marines gathered at Yeovil RFC last Wednesday to take part in the Royal Navy Rugby Union annual 7s competition. 12 men's teams and 6 women's teams travelled from around the UK to compete in the fun-filled afternoon. HMS Seahawk were crowned the victors of the men's competition while HMS Ocean's female team won the inaugural Women's touch rugby tournament. The Men's competition took the form of 3 leagues of four teams to warm the players up before the knock out stages commenced. The Army v Navy match day marks the end of the competitive rugby season for the Royal Navy Rugby Union Senior XV, Women's XV and the Mariners (the veterans' XV). But this year it also marked the occasion when the President of the RNRU, Admiral Sir Philip Jones, handed over his role as President to Vice Admiral Ben Key.
