Army v Navy Lockdown Fundraiser
On 2 May 2020, the Royal Navy Rugby Union Women’s squad would have been making history by playing their first ever Army v Navy Inter Service match at Twickenham Stadium. However, with all sporting events cancelled, the Army and Navy Rugby Women’s squads decided to make their own piece of history by challenging each other to complete over 82,000 burpees, equivalent to the capacity of Twickenham Stadium, in order to raise funds in support of the fantastic work being completed by the NHS.
With the competitive nature of both teams, players pledged to complete 143,270 burpees in the run up to this day from their homes or workplaces; well in excess of their original target: the capacity of Twickenham Stadium.
An outstanding effort from both the Army and Navy Rugby Union women’s squads resulted in £18,000 being raised in support of NHS Charities as well as over 165,000 burpees completed by both squads, along with a few thousand extras from ever-supportive friends, family and children – a real showcase of both unions’ grit, determination and commitment to each other.
Over 80 players and supporters from The Navy Rugby Women’s squad pledge to take part which saw them complete over 69,000 burpees between them plus the many more that were completed by friends and family who were keen to get involved with this historic occasion all in support of NHS Charities. One of the players who pledged to support this enormous challenge was POPT Ochiltree who completed 810 burpees, whilst pregnant!
An impressive and successful event for both teams who came together to raise money for a much deserving charity. To find out more about this event visit JustGiving
