The Portsmouth Naval Base Rugby Team have been given a boost in the form of a new set of rugby kit generously sponsored by Mainbrace, one of the companies working to support the Royal Navy. Captain of the Base, Captain Dave George, thanked Mr Dave Elcock from the company for agreeing to sponsor the Naval Base team.

Mainbrace Marine are based in Rosyth, Scotland and supply a variety of maritime products to the Royal Navy.  Most recently, they have been instrumental in equipping HMS Queen Elizabeth with her outfit of berthing ropes, towing hawsers and bridles, something referred to in the trade as the ‘mooring outfit’.  With a base on the South Coast, and employing a number of former Royal Navy personnel, the company were keen to strengthen their links within the Portsmouth Naval Base and assist our sailors in their sporting and recreation activities in addition to providing equipment in the workplace.

The Portsmouth Naval Base Rugby Officer, Chief Petty Officer Philip ‘Knocker’ White was the driving force for the new sponsorship.  Working closely with Mr Elcock and the players within the Naval Base, he designed and arranged for delivery of the new kit.  The Naval Base team play in the Eastern Region League, with regular matches against local opposition including HMS Collingwood, HMS Sultan, RAF Odiham and HMS Heron.  They also intend to enter a team in the annual Navy Cup Rugby competition starting in the New Year.  Matches are arranged throughout the season so if you are interested in playing for the team please contact LPT Cawley regina.cawley127@mod.gov.uk for more information.  LPT Cawley is keen to find a volunteer to support her in a team manager role so if you are looking to improve your leadership, management and communication skills and like rugby then let her know.
