Rugby World Cup visits home of the RNRU 27 August
COME AND VIEW THE RUGBY WORLD CUP TROPHY ON 27 AUGUST AT THE HOME OF THE RNRU - BURNABY ROAD, PORTSMOUTH
The Rugby World Cup Trophy, the Webb Ellis Cup, is making a 100-day tour of the UK and Ireland in the run up to the Rugby World Cup 2015, arriving at Twickenham Stadium on 18 September ahead of the opening ceremony. Having stopped off at HMNB Devonport on 8 July, where the Trophy was taken on board HMS Talent and HMS Ocean, the Trophy will be hosted by Portsmouth on 27 August.
To mark the occasion young rugby players from the city and local area schools and clubs have been invited to the day’s events, which are being run in a partnership between the Royal Navy, the Royal Navy Rugby Union, the Rugby Football Union, University of Portsmouth, local rugby clubs, Portsmouth City Council and England 2015. The Portsmouth Tour details are as follows:
8.45am - The Trophy will be met at the Emirates Spinnaker Tower by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth & representatives from local rugby clubs.
9.30am - The Trophy will arrive at HMS Victory. where it will be hosted by representatives from Royal Navy, Royal Navy Rugby Union, RFU, Hampshire RFU, Portsmouth City Council, University of Portsmouth.
10.15am-1pm - The Trophy will be on display at Burnaby Road for members of the Naval Service, the RNRU and general public.
This is a great chance for Rugby fans to get a close-up view of the Webb Ellis Cup and to be part of Rugby World Cup 2015.
And don't forget, running throughout October alongside the Rugby World Cup, the International Defence Rugby Competition (IDRC) will pit twelve teams of battle-hardened soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines against each other to determine the greatest Armed Forces rugby team on the planet. Teams from across the world will be hosted by the Royal Navy, the Army and the RAF for pool matches in Portsmouth, Aldershot and RAF Halton before the semi-finals and the final are held at The Stoop, home of Harlequins, during the week of the RWC Final.
