RNRU Royal Navy Rugby Union

The Royal Navy Rugby Union Women's final match of the season is played against the Army Women.  Afterwards the coveted 'Roger Sherratt trophy' is awarded to the player who is deemed to be the most valuable player of the Women's squad throughout the season.  This season, team captain Sam Alderson is the worthy recipient. 

The trophy is awarded in memory of Mr Roger Sherratt who was the first benefactor of the Royal Navy Women's team.  Roger became involved with the Navy Women's team when his daughter Clare was playing for the team, and she later took on the role of assistant team manager.  The Royal Navy Women's team remain indebted to the strong support of Roger Sherratt as he was an advocate of the Women's game, helping them gain wider recognition throughout the Navy Rugby community, and assisted them on the road to becoming a more professional organisation.

Sam won her 14^th cap for the Royal Navy today at Kneller Hall.  She started playing rugby in 2008 when she attended a grass roots session.  Originally a Rugby League player, Sam has been playing Rugby Union for many years now and also plays for Plymouth Albion. Named as the Royal Navy Women's team captain at the start of the season, Sam has led the team in the best traditions of the Royal Navy.  She has shown strong leadership qualities on and off the field and has had a very positive influence on the squad.  She is an outstanding example to her fellow sailors and rugby players alike.  Well done Sam - we look forward to seeing you in action again next season; congratulations on being awarded the Roger Sherratt trophy 2018.
