Sun Shines on RNRU Golf Day 2021
As the summer months descend on the UK the Royal Navy Rugby Union is enjoying more than just 7s as the annual RNRU Golf Day returned from a one year hiatus.
Held on the Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Mellion International Resort on the 30th of June the golf day enabled the RNRU to thank sponsors and friends for their continued support during challenging times. With the event held at one of the finest golf courses in Europe boasting rough terrain with narrow undulating fairways, tight driving lines and plentiful water hazards, the great weather ensured the day was enjoyable and competitive.
With a limitation on numbers due to Covid-19 restrictions the 28 participants, hosted by Vice Admiral Sir Ben Key KCB CBE (RNRU President), were split into 7 teams to play in a Texas Scramble but only after being wowed by Paul Barrington’s Trick Shot Show as an ice breaker.
As the day progressed and the tight competition unfolded the team led by Rear Admiral Andrew Burns (RNRU Vice President) took a 1 shot victory, the team included Bob Gray (ESS), Chris Barnard (SA-Group) & Chris Alcock (Navy Rugby Limited Chairman and RNRU Life Member). All the teams finished the day under par and within 5 strokes of the winners which ensured that everyone was suitably able to enjoy the prize giving after a tense finish.
Such as a day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Rugby in a different guise and the RNRU President, Vice Presidents and Chairman would like to thank all of the RNRU sponsors for their contributions to all levels of Royal Navy Rugby. Additionally such a day is enhanced by prize sponsors and thanks is due to all those who contributed.
