This Wednesday the Royal Navy Senior XV will travel north of the border to renew their acquaintance with the Glasgow Hawks. Entry to the match is free and all spectators are welcome so if you are able to, get along to the old Anniesland ground at the High School of Glasgow to watch the Hawks take on the Royal Navy.

This is the first time that the two teams have met since 2007 when they played a memorial match to celebrate the life of Craig Hodgkinson, a Royal Marine, who died of cardiomyopathy while playing rugby for the Royal Navy. It also raised money for the Craig Hodgkinson Trust which was set up by Craig's parents to raise money for defibrillators which are given to sporting venues throughout Scotland with the aim of preventing similar deaths in the future.

The Royal Navy starting line-up is beginning to look familiar now that the team have played 3 of their preparation matches before the Inter Service campaign starts in April. Ben Priddey should return from injury to take up his place as team captain and hooker between Mason and Robinson, with Pascoe and Harvey in the second row, and Trehan, Taylor and Fox at No 8 to complete the pack. Moore starts as scrum half, Rees is in at fly half, with Bowden, Myers, Raumakita and Welling as the backs; Jon Humphrey takes up his usual position at full back. Replacements include Tom Hughes, former Helensburgh youth player, Evans, Jones, Mason, Cooper, Dimmock-Williams, Caddywold and Davies. Submariner Matt Harvey is also happy to return to Scotland, after his photo shoot at the Glasgow Hawks ground last week.

The Royal Navy Senior XV are the current Inter Service champions and they are four weeks into their training camp in preparation for defending the title. They are based at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport (which some may remember as HMS Dolphin, the former home of the Submarine School). A series of fixtures have been arranged, of which this match against the Hawks is one, to help prepare the team to triumph over their Service colleagues in the Royal Air Force and the Army in April.

This is a special year and marks the centennial match between the Army and the Royal Navy since the establishment of the Royal Navy Rugby Union and the Army Rugby Union. The match will be played at Twickenham on Saturday 29 April kicking off at 3pm. Tickets to attend the match have already sold out but it will be broadcast live on Sky Sports and British Forces Broadcasting Service (Forces TV) for all to see.

But back to Wednesday's match. It is a an excellent opportunity for the Royal Navy to demonstrate their commitment to the local community and to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with the exciting sport of rugby, be it as players, coaches, referees, spectators or volunteers. Hopefully it will be a great night of rugby, and the evening will also raise money for the two charities - the Craig Hodgkinson Trust and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
