October sees a change in the backroom staff with WO Don Shaw, the current Sharks manager, taking over from Sid Cole with the Senior XV post Christmas. The new Secretary is yet to be appointed and the office is currently being staffed by the Director of Finance, on a part time basis. The Argyll bowl, played at Sandy Park, Exeter, proved to be the physical encounter we were all expecting, with CTCRM prevailing 17-0 in the final against 45 CDORM. A Combined Service team boasting eight Navy players in the starting XV and captained by last season's Navy Captain, Dave Pascoe (RFANSU), proved far too strong from the British Fire Service when they met at Burnaby Road. The all Navy half back partnership of Pascoe and Matt Rhodes (HMS Bulwark) were quickly into their stride and the variety of their passing, running and kicking game kept CS on the front foot. They also provided space for Navy centres Silivenusi Buinimasi (HMS Cumberland) and Greg Barden (RM Poole / CNR) to exploit through their direct running and subtle offloads. Naval Air Command start the defence of the Inverdale Cup this Wednesday at HMS Heron against Portsmouth Command. Both sides have lost a couple of players to the Combined Services who play the Fire Service the same evening so it will be an ideal opportunity for the youngster to step up and show their qualities. The other match in round one will be held at CTCRM Lympstone where the Royal Marines will host Plymouth Command. The Marines will be looking to avenge last season's narrow defeat in the final to Naval Air Command but as the current World Cup has shown if they take Wednesday's opponents lightly then the risk of an upset is always there.
