Newbury RFC claim victory at Portsmouth Heineken 10s

Newbury RFC sneaked to victory at the sixth Heineken 10s rugby festival held at US Portsmouth RFC on Saturday 27th September as the Berkshire club made the most of a last minute entry in to the competition to claim the honours. Newbury battled to an exhausting 24 – 12 win over Southampton Uni in the Cup final as their flair and class eventually shone through in the latter stages of a cagey, tight match. Earlier, the Berkshire side had put in some battling performances in the pool stages to overcome United Services 1, Winchester Vets, Sandown 2’s as well as defeating their final opponents. Greg Called Up To England Sevens Squad

This week Navy centre Greg Barden has been training as part of Ben Ryan's England 26 man Sevens Squad. The squad will eventually be whittled down to 12 for the iRB World Series opening tournament in Dubai at the end of November. However Greg, like everyone in the squad, will also have an eye on the iRB Sevens World Cup which will also be held in Dubai in March. To cap a very successful week for Greg he has also been selected for his first start of the season for Bristol, away to Montpellier, in the European Challenge Cup. Sharks Lose Out to Russia

After topping their group the Navy Sharks faced Zambia in their quarter final whom they beat to set up a semi-final against tournament hosts South Africa Defence Forces. Going 14 - 0 down was not part of Head Coach Steve Wrigglesworth's game plan but he was pleased with the way the team responded to score 21 unanswered points to win the tie. However the final proved to be a match too far and against a strong Russian side the Sharks could only manage one score and lost out 37 - 7. However the team did not go home empty handed. HMS MANCHESTER returned from the Gulf in May 08 after a 7 month deployment which saw the Ships Company integrate into the US Strike Group, and built a strong bond with US Aircraft Carrier, The Harry S Truman. During the deployment, life at sea was busy, but the good old moto ‘work hard, play hard’ was well practiced, particularly when the ship came alongside in foreign ports such as Sicily, Bahrain, Dubai and Barcelona. The Shark's topped their pool after finishing day one of the South Africa Defence Force Sevens unbeaten. They now look forward to the quarter finals and further progression on Saturday. The Sharks started their day with an impressive 49 - 0 win over an Invitational side before beating the South African Air Force 26 - 12. The last match of the day was the closest with a 27 - 21 win over South Africa Police.
