The valuing the volunteer scheme is a RFU initiative that the Royal Navy Rugby Union recognises and support. It acknowledges those people without whom rugby would not be the successful team sport that it is. In Australia in support of the Navy team taking part in the International Defence Rugby Competition Lt Cdr Tim Bailey was able to meet up with an old friend of the Referees Society. Stu Clarke, a level 6 referee with considerable experience, left the Navy and the United Kingdom nearly 5 years ago and after 6 months as a civilian he joined the New Zealand Navy. On arriving in NZ he immediately got involved with both the North Harbour Referees Association in Auckland and the New Zealand Defence Force Referees Association. With the IDRC now over it is a good time to reflect on the achievements of the tour and the focus and challenges which lie ahead for the forth-coming season. The tour started with the squad being based at RAAF Richmond, which lies about 60 km outside Sydney city centre. With the first game only 4 days away once we arrived the focus was immediately placed on putting together an effective and simple game plan which would enable the new members of the tour to settle into the navy style of rugby, although the opening ceremony for the competition which was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) gave us an opportunity to have a little sneaky look around the sites of the city.

On 19 Oct 11, the RN Women travelled to Paignton for their first fixture of the season. The Squad had been training at BRNC Dartmouth in preparation for the match and included a number of new faces, all of whom integrated well into the team. For the new Captain, Lt (Charlotte) Fredrickson (849 NAS), it was her first game in charge and she performed her new role to a very high standard, ensuring that the Ladies were focussed and motivated for the game.
