Following a busy period of both work and rugby, the players from 42 Commando concluded their pre-Christmas season during which they shared the Royal Marines Championship trophy (Argyll Bowl) for the first time ever in an epic encounter with 1 Rifles. The unit provided many of the players for this years Corps team with Captain Tom Evens-Jones leading the team to successes in Scotland against a determined RN Scotland Command. After taking 42 Commando to Portsmouth to play HMS Collingwood in the Navy Cup semi-final, he then lead the Corps to a spirited but unsuccessful defence against a star studded Fleet Air Arm side in the final of the Inverdale Trophy at Burnaby Road.

The Navy Sharks travelled to the Emirates Rugby Stadium in good spirits expecting a challenging afternoon of pool games in front of them but were confident of performing well. The first game was against Aqua Marine Services, who were an unknown quantity; they were obviously more focused because from the kick off they collected the ball, moved it wide to their winger who stepped back inside and sprinted 40 yards to score. The Sharks were finding it hard to gain possession and after repeated phases of attacking play, Aqua Marine scored again. The Sharks progressed into the semi finals of the Dubai 7's with two confident games that saw them score a total of 86 points and concede none. Their first opponents were the last pool game against russian side Spartac who were a bulky aggressive side, the Sharks however moved the ball well early on opening up space for Naval Airman Iffi Kava to score, further pressure saw tries from Corporal Greg Bardon, Marine Rob Lloyd and Sharks skipper PO Wayne John. Although the Russian side tried to attack the well organised Naval defence held firm forcing mistakes from their opponents resulting in further scores from Marine Aron Humphries, Bardon and Lloyd.

The RNRURS has selected a strong team of three for the Army v Air Force U23 Inter Services match this Saturday at Aldershot; it will be the deciding fixture with both the Army and RAF in with a shout of winning the competition. Geoff Howells takes charge, supported by Steve Woolley a Royal Navy Doctor and Royal Marine Andrew Ebbans as his Assistant Referees. The team is completed by Weapon Engineer Paddy Carbery who will be the fourth official. Geoff who is about to join the Type 45 Dauntless, began refereeing seriously in 2004 and has steadily risen through the refereeing levels with the Royal Navy and Hampshire.
