The newly formed rugby team in HMS Prince of Wales travelled to South Queensferry RFC to take on Dunfermline RFC representing the Royal Navy’s newest aircraft carrier. This was the Prince of Wales (PWLS) second game of rugby ever and many new faces were in the side with most of them playing at the ‘grass roots level’ so the game was played in 4 quarters of 20 minutes to give both sides time to bed-in their newest members. The Royal Navy Senior XV took an impressive lead 0 – 19 when they travelled to Grange Road to take on Cambridge University RUFC. However the home supporters were delighted by the tenacity of their players who fought back to win the match 27 – 26 in the final minutes of the game. In stark contrast to last year’s flooded and eventually abandoned game, conditions were perfect at Grange Road for this season’s fixture between the RN Senior XV and the Light Blues of Cambridge University. It was an unusually mild night for the time of year, and the Navy team grew in confidence as the match went on, coming from 0 - 7 down to triumph 7 - 17 at full time. It was an evening of mixed emotions for the RNRU Senior XV as they travelled to Oxford for their first outing of the season. It is with deep sadness that the Royal Navy Rugby Union reports the news of the death of one of our most capped players, Leading Airman (Aircraft Handler) Kyle Mason. Kyle was the most capped front row player (loose-head prop) in the history of the RNRU, with 29 caps to his name. Kyle joined the Royal Navy in 2004, representing the RNRU at the Under 21 level in the same year. By 2007 he had won his first Senior XV cap and he has been a regular fixture in the team ever since. He also played internationally, representing Malta 34 times in the European group stages and World Cup qualifiers.
