Successful First Day in Hong Kong

Following comfortable wins against China and then Japan, England held of a fightback from World Champions Wales to win all three of their pool matches at the Hong Kong leg of the iRN World Seven Series. Navy winger Josh Drauniniu (CTCRM) was amongst the tries in the first two matches and though he missed out against Wales was still a key player for England. This afternoon in the spring sunshine LPT Carly Allon of HMS SULTAN hosted the RNRU Ladies 7's tournament which saw teams from HM Ships ARK ROYAL & LIVERPOOL and Establishment teams from Heron, Sultan and Collingwood compete. In a hard fought contest HMS Ark Royal continued their rich vein of form in the 7's discipline using the tournament as preparation for their forthcoming trip to the Kiel 7's Tournament which will take place in June. Played in a league format the tournament was won by HMS Ark Royal with HMS Collingwood the Runners Up. Having helped the Navy to retain the Babcock Challenge against Marine Nationale the hectic schedule for Navy wing Logs(CS) Josh Drauniniu shows no sign of letting up. Having travelled to Nottingham with his club side Exeter to help with their dream of Premiership rugby he then travel to Hong Kong with England where he is due to meet the recently crowned World Champions, Wales, in the pool stage. After Hong Kong he flies to Adelaide for the Australian leg of the iRB World Sevens Series before returning to the UK in time to join his Navy team mates and the quest for the 2009 Inter Service title. As much of the focus naturally turns to the 2009 Inter Service Championship it is worth spending some time to look at how the younger talent within the Union is being nurtured and gradually brought through. Last season's success story was Wayne Dugan who following his success in the 2007 U23 Inter Service championship went on to win his cap against the RAF the following April and capped his debut at Twickenham with a well taken score. Following the successful defence of their trophy against the Irish Defence Forces at the Curragh the Navy team entertain the Marine Nationale at US Portsmouth in their first home match of the season. The team shows a number of changes and is led by second row stalwart Marsh Cormack, one of four players supplied to the squad by 845 Squadron. Marsh takes over the captaincy from scrum half Wayne John (HMS Liverpool) who has to be content with a place on the bench.
