Rachel joined the Women's Royal Naval Service in 1987 as a Wren Writer. Following successful selection at the Admiralty Interview Board, she graduated from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and the Supply School at HMS Raleigh. Her first assignment was as Secretary to Captain Submarine Maintenance in HM Naval Base Clyde before moving back south for ICSC (M) and a two year appointment as a Part III Divisional Officer at HMS Raleigh. During the course of the first half, the RN W kept the pressure on against a strong Army W team maintaining a strong defence. Performing well in the scrum, the RN W kept the Army W back in their 22 for much of the first half, but despite this, Cpl Amy Robinson (AGC) managed to break through resulting in a try for the Army early in the first half. The night before the Army v Royal Navy fixture the Royal Navy rewarded those who have given a great deal this to Royal Navy Rugby either on the pitch or in support of the teams. Firstly the RNRU President Vice Admiral P A Jones CB presented the Royal Navy Women with there playing shirts before presenting The Soapy Watson Memorial Trophy. This award is presented in memory of former RN Veteran and Senior XV Team Manager WO Soapy Watson, who was also a mainstay of Command and Establishment level rugby. It was never going to be an easy game for the RN Senior XV as they travelled to The Rec for the re-established fixture with Bath FC. Last season had seen the Senior XV perform well against a well drilled professional side, losing eventually 36-13 with the Navy pushing the Bath team all the way to the final whistle. This must have given the Bath coaching team a few sleepless nights, as this season they made sure they would not allow the Navy to put them under the same pressure or allow the Navy to be in the lead at half time.
