Rich Whelan, backrow, second from the left, won his Navy Refereeing colours on Wednesday night when he ran touch at the RAF v Army 1st XV match. Rich's appointment to the game was well deserved following a very successful season with both his civilian society of Yorkshire and with the Navy. This season he has shown the potential to make the North's Development Panel from which the National Referee candidates are chosen. The Navy Referees have selected a very experienced (in all senses - ed!) squad of officials for the three RAF v Army Inter Service matches to be held at Newbury RFC on Wednesday 19 April. Chairman of Referees, Stew Kilby, will be refereeing the Women's match supported by Piers Moore and Andy Nelson as Touch Judges. It will be Stew's first Inter Service match in the middle and is acknowledgement of a very successful season both in Service games and for his civilian society Dorset and Wilts. On a day when British teams were taking on Europe's best in the Heineken Cup, HMS OCEAN's rugby club locked horns with one of Denmark's best teams – Copenhagen Exiles, writes our Special European Correspondent.
