Friday 18 th September 2015 marks the start of the Rugby World Cup. Whilst this will be the beginning of 6 weeks of the highest quality of rugby on offer, England Rugby 2015 (ER 2015), RFU and many associated organisations have been actively engaged in the making the most out of the build up towards this prestigious tournament and the Royal Navy Rugby Union (RNRU) has been playing its part. Through participating in a number of key activities associated with this event, the RNRU aims to attract new people to rugby and also encourage ex-players back into the fold.
Under the banner of the ‘Rugby World Cup initiative’ (RWCi), a small team of RNRU volunteers, have ...
The Royal Navy Rugby Union 'Family' held its annual reunion at Twickenham on 9 May and celebrated with a festival of rugby in front of a record 81,116 crowd. Three matches took place against the Army, a Combined Services U23 match against Oxbridge U23 and a Services Youth Festival, all for the princely sum of £20; this was a day of sunshine (eventually), great rugby, comradeship and fun. Twickenham, the heart of English Rugby, hosted the oldest and most passionately fought competition in Service sport. The Army Navy rugby fixture commands a worldwide following of ardent supporters and is only matched in attendance by International fixtures. That the 2015 Army Navy match was sold o...
With the dust barely settled after another enthralling Army Navy weekend, I write with exciting news with regards to the ongoing development of Royal Navy Rugby Management and Governance. When I took over as Chairman I inherited a Management structure, comprising an Executive Committee and a relatively new Board of Trustees. The Committee has recently grown from 8 to 10 members with the inclusion of Lieutenant Mike Wells as Treasurer and Commander Andy Coles as the Referee Member, in recognition of the need to tackle the thorny issue of recruiting and retaining appropriate numbers of officials to allow us to grow our rugby output. The requirement for this latter appointment will be as...
When Rosie Haigh crossed for the Army Women’s final score they had retained their Inter Service crown with another resounding victory, 65-0. A winning margin one point more than last year but well short of the record score that many were predicting. And the reason? Eighty minutes of almost continuous backs to the wall defence from a Navy side determined to make the Army work for every single point.
This season has probably been the most difficult for the RN Women’s team in recent years. A busy operational programme denied them access to many established players through the build up to the Inter Services and a handful throughout the Inter Services it...
Having clipped the wings of the Royal Air Force Vultures last month it was the Army Masters who were put to the sword at Kneller Hall. The 20-15 score was in many ways equally as impressive as the earlier win at RAF Halton. First half pressure was not reflected on the scoreboard and despite the Masters regaining the lead the Mariners held their composure to close out the match for a Championship winning 20-15 victory.
It was the Army who took the lead through their livewire scrum half Slade-Jones who evaded the Mariners cover defence to stretch out for the try in the right corner. With the conversion missed the Mariners found themselves 5-0 down but unconcerned. ...
