St Mellion International Resort has recently celebrated the 10th birthday of the Nicklaus signature course and it was the venue for the Royal Navy Rugby Union Annual Golf Day. Sponsors, executive committee members, referees and players gathered together with some St Mellion members to brave the challenges of the 6,572 yard Cornish countryside. Liam started playing rugby when he was just 8 years old. He instantly developed a passion for the sport and as he continued to progress in junior Rugby he was selected on two successive seasons for Gloucestershire’s Development Squad.
After joining the Royal Navy as an Engineering Technician in 2012, Liam quickly got involved in Navy Rugby, playing in the Newquay 7s in 2013. After initially playing as a scrum half in 15s, he was selected for the Royal Navy Under 23s squad, and represented the Royal Navy in the position of winger in Inter Service tournaments in both 2015 and 2016 for that age group. The Royal Navy Rugby Union travelled to Yeovil Rugby Football Club to enjoy a celebration of summer 7s and with a significant amount of rugby played, a Baa-Baas team took the Ladies’ title while their male colleagues’ competition was won by Viking Squadron ‘A’ team. Royal Navy sailors and marines were drawn to Yeovil RFC again for the annual Royal Navy Rugby Union 7s tournament. An opportunity for rugby in the sun, where the paddock is firm under foot and the boys and girls who usually play in the backs get to make hay with the acres of space around them (or because the forwards are blowing). The building blocks for the RNRU 7s have now been set and on Saturday all 3 Royal Navy Rugby Union 7s sides were in action in Cleve, Bristol competing in the South West 7s Tournament. The teams ended the day lifting 3 new trophies - what a great result! The teams met for a day of preparations at Azimghur Barracks, home of the 21st Signals Regiment who kindly allowed their facilities to be used for the duration of the RNRU 7s' stay. Walking out of the tunnel of the Poti Rugby Stadium on a hot and sunny afternoon, HMS Duncan’s Rugby Team took to the pitch to a scene akin to an international. Duncan and her opposition, the combined team from the Georgian Armed Forces, lined up on the 5 metre line to sing their respective national anthems. The booming music and less than partisan crowd raised the atmosphere as well as the heart rates of all involved. Few in Duncan had ever played in front of such a crowd or in such an amazing facility.
