“It's a ruck, not a beach, don't just lie there!” Ironically referee Andre Watson said that in 2001, perhaps unaware of the exponential growth of beach rugby’s popularity across the rugby-playing world.  Now in its fourth year, the Royal Navy Rugby Union Beach Rugby Festival returned to Weymouth hoping for favourable weather akin to the previous tournaments.  However the fickle British climate dictated that the sun-cream and floppy hats were ditched for umbrellas and warm jumpers, though this did little to dampen the spirit of the sailors who made the journey down to Dorset to participate. Royal Navy Sharks - Semi-finalists in the Exeter 7s

The Royal Navy Sharks and Royal Navy 7s development side the Stingrays travelled to Exeter to take part in the South West 7s tournament on 15 July 2017.  The tournament had been reorganised at the last minute which left both Royal Navy sides competing against each other.  Joining the Royal Navy sides were the Royal Marines 7s team 'the 1664s' who also enter tournaments around the country so on the Friday all the teams had a joint training session at CTC Lympstone where they shared their skills and 7s knowledge. In only their 3rd tournament since the formation of their team, the Royal Navy Rugby Union Women's 7s team, the Royal Navy Makos, finished runners up in the Spinnaker 7s competition held at Havant Rugby Football Club last weekend.  With a few new players joining their ranks, and a number of familiar faces, all the women were up for a full-on day of 7s rugby. Alan Church - the 2017 'Chris Alcock' Award Winner

The Royal Navy Rugby Union is delighted to announce the recipient of the Chris Alcock award for outstanding contribution to Royal Navy Rugby for 2017 is Commander Alan Church, RNRU Director of Operations.  Alan is the second deserved winner of the trophy, which was first awarded in 2016 to Senior XV Head Coach, Ash Coates.  The award was presented by Life Member and former Chairman, Captain Chris Alcock at the Royal Navy Rugby Union Annual Dinner and Ball held at Fort Blockhouse last month.  Chris was able to regale the assembled audience, made up of players, officials, coaches, team managers, executive committee, life members, staff, sponsors and supporters, with tales ...
