Wednesday saw the first game of this seasons Inverdale Challenge, when Royal Navy West played the Royal Marines at Devonport Services RFC. Due to operational and training commitments, many inter command players from both teams were unavailable. This offered opportunities to previously unseen talent, and those new players didn’t disappoint producing a great game of rugby.

A trip across the Welsh border to face a combination of the Cardiff Metropolitan University teams provided the ideal opportunity for team training in Brecon before the match in Cardiff. The training seemed to pay off and the Royal Navy Under 23s came away victorious.

Wednesday saw a fine display of grassroots rugby across the fleet with 3 outstanding Navy Cup Quarter Finals. The first round saw HMS Sultan beat HMNB Collingwood 87-0, and HMS Heron beat HMS Collingwood 68-7. This teed up a mouth-watering round of quarter finals, and Wednesdays matches didn’t disappoint. In the afternoon BRNC took on the defending champions HMS Seahawk in Dartmouth. The game was extremely tight with Seahawk closing out the match to win 30-29. Navy Rugby are delighted to announce the appointment of Commander Arty Shaw RN as the Senior XV Assistant Director of Rugby. “After an extremely enjoyable playing career at every level in the RN, Commander Michael ‘Arty’ Shaw finally retired when persistently living a yard offside in the back row became a yellow card offence. He then transitioned into administrative side of the game, becoming part the Training Support Groups for the RN Mariners and RN Presidents XV.
