RN U23 Head Coach, Owen Salmon (RNAS Yeovilton) expressed himself pleased with Saturday's victory over the RAF U23. However he was also quick to point out that the team will need to work hard this week and look to eradicate some of the unforced errors that were made. It is hardly suprising that the team played in a slightly disjointed fashion as it was the first time they had played together this season. Captined by AB Will Cairns who is now with the Type 23 Pool having recently been part of HMS St Albans the team features a number of players who were part of the successful 2009 Babcock Commonwealth Cup campaign. Despite the set back of losing two fixtures immediately prior to the tournament the squad travel to RAF Cranwell in positive mood as they seek a winning start to the competition. With temperatures in the 100’s the Rugby team got out to play while the Red Rose was alongside in Jeddah for 24 hours. The fixture was organised against a local expat team with the game being played on grass, without any posts. The game was in the form of 7’s with 4 quarters of 7 mins each being played due to the very warm weather. The red rose sporting a brand new strip thanks to CPO May and CPO Cherrington with Ktees doing there bit with the ships crest came under a opening barrage finding there selves 4-1 down early on. The Referees held a training day to that coincided with the culmination of the Commonwealth Cup in Plymouth; it was attended by 25 society members travelling from all parts of the country. The Day started with the presentation of the annual Society awards. Firstly Geoff Howells was recognised as the Referee of the Year; collecting the Admiral Royds Trophy. Geoff has made great progress through the year juggling a busy operational job with refereeing both Service and civilian matches; 2008/09 culminated in him being promoted to Level 6.
