A converted try by Gloucester after 10 minutes rocked Excellent back but they soon shook off their cobwebs, and the second quarter saw the Excellent forwards step up to score their first try of the game. Recent Navy Cup Finals have been refereed by officials from the RAF and the Army Societies but this season the final of the RNRU Knockout Cup, featuring HMS Collingwood and 42 Cdo RM, returns to the Navy Society and will be refereed by Stu Clarke of HMS Raleigh. Though Stu has run the touch in the 2001 Navy Cup final this is his debut as the referee. For those of you who remember Collingwood were also in that final defeating CTCRM in a pulsating match. The RN VII defeated CGS Old Boys 28 – 7 earlier today in the Semi Finals of the Dubai International Overseas Sevens. CGS, also known as Llanelli Scarlets academy are an established sevens side, which goes to show the level at which the Navy team are now playing. However they still have one more mountain to climb when they meet the Pyranees, who are the holders, in the final. This is due to be played at 13:20 GMT. A 26 - 16 victory over the French side and Overseas Trophy holders, Pyrenees was a tribute the Navy's teamwork, fitness and professionalism. Billy May, the coach, was quoted as 'Being over the moon'. Royal Navy Rugby Union President, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, had slightly more to say, he remarked 'The team showed tremendous spirit in the final; they weathered the early French fire and pressure before gradually asserting themselves on the match. Building on the success from the pool phase, the RN 7's team beat Blackpool in the International Overseas Competition ¼ Final 37:7 and now face the CGS Old Boys in the second semi final tomorrow.(CGS Old Boys are in essence Llanelli Scarlets Academy). The other Semi Final will be contested by Pyranees v Price Waterhouse. To date all the Semi Finalists are currently un-beaten in the tournament except for Price Waterhouse who drew a pool match 12:12 with DHL Baghdadies. The RN match will take place at 07:20 GMT on Friday 2 Dec. The final is later in the day at 13:20GMT on the main pitch two games before the first iRB Trophy Semi Final.
