The Navy Sharks can be pleased with their final outing of the 2015 campaign at the Harpenden National Pub Sevens. Unbeaten in the pool stages they lost 19-14 to Apache Raiders in a competitive Quarter Final. The Raiders went on to beat Germany in the Semi Final before winning the Singleton Cup with a strong performance against Wooden Spoon Marauders in the final. For the Sharks, the Quarter Final was a pertinent lesson in the intensity required at the breakdown if they wish to regularly compete in the main cup competitions but this shouldn’t be allowed to detract from an overall good day of sevens rugby by the Navy Sharks. A new member of the RNRU Communications Team, David Martin, has recently embarked on a quest to become a rugby referee. There is currently a shortage of referees, not only in the Royal Navy but in the UK as a whole, and this was one of the reasons David decided to enrol on the “Level 2 – Refereeing the 15-a-side game” Course. The Webb Ellis Cup certainly brought an improvement in the weather when it was escorted into Portsmouth. Preceded by two days of torrential rain the auspices did not augur well. The highly polished trophy certainly put the shine on the day for a lot of enthusiastic young players as well as for the more sedentary older generation. The inaugural Rugby Aid charity match, featuring former international players, celebrities and serving members of the Armed Forces, will take place at Harlequins’ Twickenham Stoop stadium on Friday, 4 September, at 19:45. The match will also be shown live on BT Sport.
The fixture is in aid of Rugby For Heroes, which raises funds and awareness through the sport of rugby, the fan community and the wider professional player network to support military personnel who are making the transition back from military service to civilian life.

The Rugby World Cup Trophy, the Webb Ellis Cup, is making a 100-day tour of the UK and Ireland in the run up to the Rugby World Cup 2015, arriving at Twickenham Stadium on 18 September ahead of the opening ceremony.
